2012 vs 2020 – The state of our Democracy and Karma.

Some Ghanaians believes The law of Karma is at the doorsteps of Mahama and NDC, taking what happened after the 2012 General Election into consideration.

In 2012, the electoral Commission led by Kwadwo Afari-Gyan declared John Mahama and NDC winner of the Presidential election, a decision the then opposition party NPP repudiated, claiming they raised several concerns to the EC prior to the declaration which were all ignored.

It generated a lot of issues among citizens, questioning the independent level of the Electoral commission. The sitting President Mahama, boldly told the Loosing Candidates not to impeach the commission and go to court if they have any evidence of irregularities. Something the Akufo-Addo Led party fulfilled.

In the Supreme Court, it turned out to be one of the funny side of our democracy. From a running mate who is in court to defend his claims of a rigged election saying “You and l were not there” to an incumbent governments general secretary saying “My Lord l am not a Lawyer” after being questioned if he knows there is a law governing creation of new poling stations before election. Interesting.

Fast Foward, 2020 is here, this time The NDC and John Mahama are on the loosing side. The presidential Candidate has rejected the Election results claiming it has been rigged in favor of the incumbent just as his opponent did 8 years ago. Here comes the big question, why won’t Mahama walk straight to court since he advised someone to do exactly that few years ago? Is he afraid he wouldn’t get the justice he seeks? If yes, why would he be afraid if truly the 2012 ruling was a clean judgement in his favor?

Sadly,Even though this might be the same argument compared to 2012, l can tell you as a neutral citizen that there is a slight difference as the then Commission does not incompetently changes figures they already released to the public and still making simple arithmetic mistakes like we are seeing today.

In all, the bitter truth in my view is that no court is going to overturn the election results no matter the evidence gathered in front of them because that is going to cause more harm than good. Imagine The scenes in this country if Mahama should be declared winner in court after Akufo-Addo lost it in 2012. Violence is going to erupt everywhere. It’s only one Ghana for us all so let’s maintain the peace that our neighbors wish to enjoy..
