In Halifax, West Yorkshire, where he was raised, Alex Lees attended Holy Trinity Senior School. His first experience playing cricket was with Bradshaw Cricket Club in the Halifax Cricket League, where he quickly advanced from beginner to senior levels before the age of thirteen. At the age of 13, Lees moved to Illingworth from Bradshaw. He joined Yorkshire in 2006, beginning at the under-11 level. Before moving up to the first squad, he participated in and served as captain of the Yorkshire Academy in the Yorkshire ECB County Premier League and the Yorkshire Second XI in the Second XI Championship.

In June 2010, he played his first game of first-class cricket, scoring 38 runs against India A. When playing against Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities at Headingley in April 2013, Lees scored 121 to record his first-ever first-class century.

In 2010 and 2011, he was a member of the England player development XI. Lees received a junior-pro contract, Yorkshire County Cricket Club declared in September 2011. Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott praised him, saying, “I believe he’s really excellent… I like the full package with him.”
