Ovechkin, often known as “Ovi” (also written “Ovie”) and “the Great Eight,” is one of the greatest goal scorers of all time and owns the record for the most power play goals in NHL history.
Ovechkin kicked off his professional career in 2001 with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague, where he remained for four seasons before returning briefly during the 2012–13 NHL lockout.
In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, the Washington Capitals picked Ovechkin, a highly regarded prospect, first overall. Ovechkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie and finished third in league scoring in his debut season with the Washington Capitals (2005-06) with 52 goals and 54 assists for a total of 106 points.
Many hockey fans rank Ovechkin among the NHL’s all-time greats, and some even think he has a legitimate shot at surpassing Wayne Gretzky in goals scored (894).
