A left-winger for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin was born in Russia on September 17, 1985.

Early in his childhood, he and his family relocated to a large high-rise structure outside of Moscow that was bordered by a “crumbling neighborhood.” He finished eight and a half grades at public school #596, known for its strict military policies and “tyrannical” principal, before enrolling in Dynamo Moscow’s sports academy. Ovechkin was attending regular training sessions day and night as he witnessed his friends “getting high and getting dead.” He described this early training as “you delve into sport with your head, arms, and legs, and there’s no time for anything else.”
