Early in his childhood, he and his family relocated to a large high-rise structure outside of Moscow that was bordered by a “crumbling neighborhood.” He finished eight and a half grades at public school #596, known for its strict military policies and “tyrannical” principal, before enrolling in Dynamo Moscow’s sports academy. Ovechkin was attending regular training sessions day and night as he witnessed his friends “getting high and getting dead.” He described this early training as “you delve into sport with your head, arms, and legs, and there’s no time for anything else.”

On September 17, 1985, Alexander was born in Moscow. He was a son of Soviet sportsmen at birth. His mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, won two gold medals at the Olympics in 1976 and 1980 and was the world basketball champion in 1975.
