He participated in prep basketball for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Since the league started implementing age limitation restrictions in 2005, he became the first American to enter and be selected in an NBA draft immediately after graduating from high school.
The Portland Trail Blazers selected Simons with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. The Trail Blazers made the announcement that they had signed Simons on July 2, 2018, and Simons was given to the Agua Caliente Clippers by the Blazers on January 21, 2019, as part of an NBA G League assignment.
Simons made his first career start against the Sacramento Kings, when Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum were rested for the Trail Blazers’ final regular-season game on April 10, 2019. He became the first Trail Blazers rookie to score 30 or more points since Lillard with a performance that set all-time highs for him with 37 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists.
