The creation myth of the Abrahamic religions claims that the first man and woman were Adam and Eve. They are essential to the idea that we are all members of one big family that originated with just two original ancestors. They also serve as the foundation for the important Christian doctrines of the fall of man and original sin, which are not held in Judaism or Islam. There are two creation narratives with two distinct perspectives in the Hebrew Bible’s Book of Genesis, chapters one through five. Adam and Eve are not named in the first. Instead, God created humankind in His image and told them to multiply and be stewards over everything else that God created. In the second story, God creates Adam out of dust and places him in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 3 continues the story with the “expulsion from Eden” narrative. According to a form analysis of Genesis 3, this section of the story can be classified as a parable or “wisdom tale” in the wisdom tradition. The chapter’s poetic addresses belong to a speculative type of wisdom that questions life’s paradoxes and harsh realities. The format, settings, and plot of the story all influence this characterization. Genesis 3’s form is also influenced by its vocabulary, which employs a variety of puns and double entendres.
