At the age of six, Buxton began playing baseball. He participated in sports for the school’s football, basketball, and baseball teams while attending Appling County High School in Baxley, Georgia. In high school, Buxton picked up the moniker “Buck.” He had a 10-1 win-loss record, a 1.90 earned run average, and 154 strikeouts in 81 innings thrown as a pitcher during his senior year.

In Baxley, Georgia, Buxton attended Appling County High School. He was chosen with the second overall choice in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft because several baseball analysts thought he was the most skilled player available. In 2013, he was presented the Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year Award. In 2015, Buxton made his MLB debut, and in 2017, he took home the Gold Glove Award.
