CAF set to move AFCON 2021 back to the summer.

The Confederation Of African Football, CAF, is set to in the coming days, back track on their decision to host the AFCON 2021 in the winter of the coming year.

Speaking at an interview in Egypt, the general secretary of CAF, Abdul Moneim Bah, spoke about the Confederation’s plans when football resumes after the COVID 19 pandemic, which includes moving the AFCON 2021 back to the summer.

Mr. Bah also spoke about moving the AFCON back to the summer like last year.

“The vision of CAF is clear, which is that the Nations Championship should be held in the summer,” Bah said on the Egyptian On Time Sport on Sunday night.

“The local authorities in Cameroon requested that the tournament be held in January and February due to climatic conditions at the time of June and July.”

“We were between playing in difficult climatic conditions, facing the possibility of postponing many matches or playing in January and February, and facing the permanent problem related to the availability of players,” Mr. Bah concluded.

Cameroon sited poor weather conditions amongst others as reasons to host the tournament in January. However, the global pandemic of COVID 19 has had an impact on the global football calender and hereby distorting the plans of the Confederation.

The Confederation is now putting plans together in accordance to the distortion the pandemic has brought.
