Nacho Libre is a 2006 sports comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Jared Hess. It stars Jack Black as Ignacio, a Catholic priest and luchador enthusiast who secretly moonlights as a luchador to support his orphanage. The plot is inspired in part by the real-life Mexican Catholic priest Fray Tormenta who spent 23 years as a masked luchador to fund the orphanage he ran. The film was created by Black, White, David Klawans, and Julia Pistor.

On June 16, 2006, Paramount Pictures released the picture. It earned mixed reviews from reviewers and grossed $99.3 million at the global box office against a production budget of $35 million.

Black was a fan of the film Napoleon Dynamite and its director, Jared Hess, and the two met in Los Angeles to talk about working together. Black was intrigued by Hess’ concept of a man of God covertly living a violent life through his love of Lucha libre wrestling. During production, Black suffered an eye gash after leaping out of the wrestling ring during a stunt. Despite being transported to the hospital, he was able to resume filming. The film was fully shot in Oaxaca, Mexico.
