The two main branches of Islam are Sunni Islam and Shia Islam (commonly known as Shiites). After the Prophet Muhammad passed away in 632 C.E., a disagreement over who would take over as leader gave rise to the first Sunni and Shia identities.

With over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, Islam is the second most popular religion in the world after Christianity.

Islam is the youngest of the main world faiths but has older origins. Most scholars date the founding of Islam to the 7th century.

When the prophet Muhammad was alive, Islam was founded at Mecca, which is now in Saudi Arabia. Today, the faith is quickly gaining ground over the globe.

Can Muslims have multiple wives?
