As a teenager, he worked at his father’s auto repair shop and was a quarterback on the Calistoga High School football team. Vermeil attended Napa Junior College after graduating from Calistoga High School in 1954. (now Napa Valley College).
After two years at Napa, he transferred to San Jose State College (now University). Vermeil started as quarterback for the 1957 San Jose State Spartans after one year as a backup on the 1956 team, throwing for 580 yards, one touchdown, and nine interceptions on a 3-7 team.
Vermeil earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1958 and a master’s degree in 1959 from San Jose State.
