One of four children, Vermeil was born in Calistoga, California. When he was a teenager, he worked at his father’s auto repair shop and was a quarterback for the football team at Calistoga High School. Vermeil enrolled at Napa Junior College in 1954, the year he graduated from Calistoga High (now Napa Valley College). After two years at Napa, he transferred to San Jose State College (now University). Vermeil spent one season as a backup quarterback for the San Jose State Spartans football team in 1956 before taking over as the starter in 1957. He threw for 580 yards, one touchdown, and nine interceptions on a 3-7 team.
At San Jose State, Vermeil earned a bachelor’s in physical education in 1958 and a master’s in physical education in 1959.
In 1959, Vermeil started his career as a football coach by working as an assistant at San Jose’s Del Mar High School. He then served as the head coach at San Mateo’s Hillsdale High School from 1960 to 1962. In 1963, he moved up to the junior college level and became the defensive backfield coach at College of San Mateo.
When Vermeil returned to Napa Junior College in 1964 for his first head coaching job, the Chiefs had the best record in school history with a 7-2 mark. He played for his younger brother Al while he was attending Napa JC. Vermeil worked as a Stanford assistant coach for John Ralston from 1965 to 1968.
