Gregorius was born in Amsterdam to Dutch baseball player Johannes Gregorius Sr. When Gregorius was five years old, his family relocated to Curaçao, where he started playing tee-ball and youth baseball. Gregorius first caught the attention of MLB scouts when he was a youngster, and in 2007, after the Reds offered to bring him to the country, he decided to sign with them.
