Born in Latvia, American physician Visvaldis George Nagobads passed away in March 2023. He was born in Riga, Latvia, and spent the first 25 years of his life there, but he eventually rose to become one of the most important figures in American hockey history.
Nagobads, who received his medical degree from the University of Tubingen in Germany, emigrated to the United States in 1951 to begin his surgical residency at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis.
In the end, Nagobads served as the men’s ice hockey team’s team physician for the University of Minnesota from 1958 until his departure in 1992. Nagobads received the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award, which is given each year to a member of the squad, at Herb Brooks’ suggestion.
