George Stinney was born in October 21, 1929 and passed away on June 16, 1944. George Stinney was an African American boy who, at the age of 14, was found guilty and put to death in a trial that was later overturned due to unfairness. In March 1944, two young girls, Betty June Binnicker, 11, and Mary Emma Thames, 7, were killed in his hometown of Alcolu, South Carolina. George Stinney was confirmed to be guilty, sentenced to death by electric chair in the 20th century.

In 2004, the Northeastern University School of Law, a number of other parties, and the case of Stinney were reexamined. Seventy years after being put to death, Stinney’s murder conviction was overturned in 2014 after a South Carolina judge ruled that his trial had been unfair and that he should not have been put to death. Consequently, a vacated judgment has no further power or effect since it “places the parties in the position that no trial has ever taken put.”
