Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin was born in Russia on September 17, 1985. He is a left winger with the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals (NHL). Ovechkin, one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history, is referred to as “the Great Eight” and “Ovi” by fans. He currently owns the league record for the most power play goals ever scored.

Before making a brief comeback in 2012–13 as a result of the NHL lockout, Ovechkin started his professional career in 2001 with Russian Superleague team Dynamo Moscow. Ovechkin, a much-anticipated talent, was taken first overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Ovechkin had the most points of any rookie in 2005–06 with 52 goals and 54 assists, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. He came in third in the league in scoring during his debut season with the Capitals.

Ovechkin has competed for Russia in a number of international competitions. The 2002 World U18 Championship served as his introduction to IIHF competition. He made his World Junior Championship debut the following year, helping Russia win the gold medal. He participated in the World Junior Championships for two additional years and the World U18 Championships once more. 2004 saw Ovechkin compete in both the World Cup and his first senior tournament, the World Championship. In addition, Ovechkin represented Russia in games at the Winter Olympics in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
