Too much of something is dangerous

Even too much of a good thing can be poisonous. We use salt in most of our foods every day mostly for taste. But tastiness is the only role that salt plays. It has many other benefits to our bodies such as preventing low blood pressure, keeping you hydrated, and, enhancing proper thyroid functions.

On the other hand, eating too much salt has its downside. It increases one’s risk of osteoporosis, stomach cancer and can also lead to cardiovascular health issues. Besides that, too much salt is also bad for your skin.

Side effects of consuming too much salt to your skin

Too much salt causes the body to retain water. Actually, one way to tell if you are consuming too much sodium is to look at your face especially the area under your eyes. As you already know, the skin around your eyes is very thin and hence more prone to swelling. Another area that can be affected is your stomach.

The body is always trying hard to maintain a water-sodium balance. If you, therefore, take too much salt and fail to take more water to counter the excessive salt, the body retains the little water available leading to puffiness.

Another downside of too much salt to your skin is dehydration. When your body is dehydrated, your skin suffers too. When your skin gets dry, it reacts by producing more sebum to cater for the dryness. The excess oils in return cause skin breakouts.
