Only found in North America, the American bison, or B. bison, is the more prevalent of the two remaining species. It is only distantly related to the real buffalo, despite being referred to as one informally in the United States and Canada. The Plains bison, or B. b. bison, and the wood bison, or B. b. athabascae, which bears the name of Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park, are the two subspecies that make up the North American species.
How Long Do Bison Live?
Bison have a lifespan of up to 20 years. Although some bison live to be older, the average lifespan is 10 to 20 years. Cows start having children at the age of two and only have one child at a time. Males are most fertile between the ages of 6 and 10 years.
