Woodstock Music and Art Fair, usually known simply as Woodstock, was a music festival held 40 miles (65 kilometers) southwest of Woodstock on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York. It was touted as “an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” and it drew over 400,000 people.

Despite the weather, 32 performers performed outside. The festival is widely regarded as a watershed moment in the history of popular music as well as a watershed moment for the counterculture generation.

The event’s renown was boosted by a documentary film, a soundtrack CD, and a song written by Joni Mitchell that became a massive hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and Matthews Southern Comfort.

For the tenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth, thirty-fifth, fortieth, and fiftieth anniversaries, Woodstock-themed music acts were scheduled. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 19th among the 50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll History in 2004. The festival site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
