Named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor-General of Canada, who gave it as a prize to Canada’s greatest amateur ice hockey club, the trophy was first created in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.

Professional teams first became eligible to compete for the Stanley Cup in 1906, and the inaugural Cup was given to the Montreal Hockey Club in 1893.
