Sir James Arthur Ratcliffe FIChemE is a chemical engineer and businessman who was born in England on October 18, 1952. Ratcliffe is the chairman and CEO of the Ineos chemicals firm, which he created in 1998 and retains a two-thirds ownership in and is projected to generate $15 billion in revenue in 2019. He has a modest level of fame and has been dubbed “publicity shy” by The Sunday Times. He was the richest individual in the UK as of May 2018 with a net worth of $21.05 billion.

Ratcliffe was raised in a council house in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, where he was born. His parents were joiners, and his mother worked in an accounting office. His father eventually owned a factory that produced furniture for laboratories. When he was eleven years old, his family relocated to East Yorkshire. Ratcliffe attended Beverley Grammar School and resided in Hull until he was eighteen.

In 1974, Ratcliffe earned his degree from the University of Birmingham.

His first work was with the enormous oil company Esso, but he sought to expand his knowledge of finance by studying management accounting. He attended London Business School from 1978 to 1980, earning an MSc in finance, and in 2016 contributed £25 million to the institution. He joined the US private equity firm Advent International in 1989.
