‘I killed during the second world war because I was trained to. It’s either you kill or they kill you’ – Veteran Joseph Hammond confesses

Veteran Joseph Hammond has disclosed that he killed during the second world war because he was trained to.

95-year-old Second World War (WWII) Ghanaian veteran – Private Joseph Ashitey Hammond during an interview with Abeiku Santana said he killed during his battle at the second world war.

He explained that he was trained to kill and that it is either you kill someone or the unfortunate happens to you.

Joseph Ashitey Hammond, however, failed to give the exact number of people he killed during the war. Also, the Veteran said whenever a soldier returns from war and tells the number of people he’s been able to kill, then he may be lying.

The veteran is one of the most respected people in Ghana.

He was recently honoured by Queen Elizabeth for his fundraising efforts.

Private Joseph Hammond walked two miles (3.2km) a day for a week in May, raising $35,000 (£28,000) for frontline health workers and veterans in Africa.

The old man also witnessed Ghana’s struggles for independence after they returned from world war 2.

Three years after the end of World War Two, Ghana, then the Gold Coast, was rocked by riots following the killing of three Ghanaian veterans who had been demanding compensation for their service during the conflict.

It became a milestone in Ghana’s struggle for independence from the UK, which was achieved in 1957.
