Omar was born and reared in Baidoa, Somalia, on October 4, 1982. She and her younger sister, Sahra Noor, were the youngest of seven siblings. Nur Omar Mohamed, her father, served as a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre while also learning to be a teacher. He is a Somali native who hails from the Majeerteen clan in northern Somalia.
Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a member of the Benadiri group of Yemeni ancestry, died when Ilhan was two years old. Her father and grandfather raised her as moderate Sunni Muslims who opposed the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.
She is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Before being elected to Congress, Omar served as a representative for a section of Minneapolis in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She represents all of Minneapolis, including some suburbs on the city’s outer ring.
