Abraham Lincoln, a lawyer, politician, and statesman from the United States, presided as the country’s 16th president from 1861 until his murder in 1865. Abraham Lincoln was born into poverty in a log cabin in Kentucky, and he spent most of his childhood growing up on the frontier, primarily in Indiana.

Along with ending slavery, fortifying the federal government, and modernizing the American economy, Abraham Lincoln was also successful in guiding the Union through the American Civil War to preserve the nation as a constitutional union.

Abraham Lincoln self-educated himself to become an attorney, leader of the Whig Party, Illinois state legislator, and congressman for Illinois.

In 1849, Lincoln resumed his successful legal practice in central Illinois. After becoming incensed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which made slavery legal in the new territory, Lincoln returned to politics in 1854.

During the 1858 Senate campaign debates, where he faced off against Stephen A. Douglas, he quickly rose to the position of leader of the fledgling Republican Party and gained widespread notoriety. In 1860, he ran for president and won with a significant margin in the North.

Southern states started seceding from the union as a result of pro-slavery groups in the South seeing Lincoln’s election as a danger to slavery. Around this period, the newly established Confederate States of America began taking southern federal military facilities.

Little over a month after Abraham Lincoln took office, the Confederate States seized control of the American fort at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln collected his troops after the bombardment in order to put an end to the rebellion and restore the union.
