Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago to conservative, Methodist parents. His mother Grace Caroline wanted him to be a missionary. Hefner attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign where he obtained a degree in psychology in 1949.

In 1952, Hugh raised money, $1000 from his mother, $8000 from investors and $600 mortgage loan to launch Playboy magazine. The first issue came out in 1953 with Marilyn Monroe featured in it and sold 50,000 copies.

Hugh expanded the playboy brand to include clubs, television shows and other merchandise.

Hefner was known to wear a red robe, smoke his pipes and live in luxury mansions where Playboy playmates shared his wild partying life.

Hugh Hefner “Hef” suffered a stroke at the age of 58, this made him change his excessive wild parties lifestyle but he made full recovery. He lived to the age of 91 years when he died on September 27, 2017, at his Playboy Mansion.

He was seen as a controversial figure with some people calling him a Pimp while some saw him as a Rebel and instrumental to the sexual revolution.
