Thomas Jacob “Jack” Black was born on August 28, 1969, in Santa Monica, California to satellite engineers Judith Love Cohen and Thomas William Black. He is of Russian-Jewish and British-German origin. Black received his education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Jack was a member of Tim Robbins’ acting troupe while at UCLA, and it was through this collaboration that he made his film debut in Bob Roberts in 1992. (1992). Although he was only a background character in his first film, Jack’s appearances on television shows such as The X-Files (1993), his breakthrough performance in High Fidelity (2000), and his rock-comedy band, Tenacious D have all contributed to his cult status.
Black, along with Kyle Gass, is the lead singer and guitarist for the comedy rock/hard rock band Tenacious D. They have four albums, including their self-titled debut, The Pick of Destiny, Rize of the Fenix, and Post-Apocalypto. One of their songs, “The Metal,” from their album The Pick of Destiny, was featured in the music video games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Brütal Legend. The song “Rock Your Socks,” from the album Tenacious D, was also featured in the music video game Rock Band Unplugged.
