In an effort to break her four-wheel land speed record, Jessi Combs perished on August 27, 2019, after crashing a jet-powered high-speed race car in the Alvord Desert in southeast Oregon.
The official cause of death was identified as “blunt-force trauma to the head,” which happened before the race car caught fire after the collision. Jessica Combs received the female land-speed world record posthumously from Guinness World Records in June 2020.
Prior to her crash, Jessi’s final run across Oregon’s Alvord Desert on August 27, 2019, achieved 522.783 mph, breaking Kitty O’Neil’s 1976 record of 512.71 mph for women at the same spot.
The land speed record attempt and Jessi’s career are covered in the 2022 movie “The Fastest Woman on Earth,” which was shot over a seven-year period starting in 2013.
