It stars Jack Black as Ignacio, a Catholic friar and luchador fan who secretly moonlights as a luchador to help fund his orphanage. Ignacio’s parents, a Scandinavian Lutheran missionary and a Mexican deacon, both died when he was a baby. Ignacio, now a cook for the Oaxaca monastery orphanage where he was raised, aspires to be a luchador, but wrestling is strictly forbidden by the monastery because it is considered a sin of vanity. Despite his deep concern for the orphans, Ignacio is unable to provide them with adequate meals due to a lack of funds. He also struggles with his feelings for Sister EncarnaciĆ³n, a nun who has recently arrived to teach at the orphanage.

One night, while collecting a bag of tortilla chips for the orphans, Ignacio is mugged for the chips by a street thief named Steven. Ignacio has had enough of the monastery’s rules and decides to become a luchador in order to make money. He persuades Steven to join him by promising to split the prize money if they win, and the two enter a local competition as tag partners.
