Padma Lakshmi was raised in a Tamil Brahmin family in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India, where she was born in 1970. When she was two years old, her parents got divorced. When she was four years old, she later immigrated to the US with her mother and stepfather. She spent her early years in Manhattan, New York, and her later years in La Puente, California. Lakshmi has written about how her stepfather sexually assaulted her when she was a young child. In 1984, she was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a severe skin reaction, and spent three weeks in the hospital. Just two days after leaving the hospital, she was severely injured in a car accident in Malibu, with significant damage to her right hip and right upper arm.
In 1988, Lakshmi graduated from William Workman High School in City of Industry, California, and received her high school diploma. She continued her education at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she graduated in 1992 with degrees in theater arts and American literature. Lakshmi was discovered by a modeling agency while she was 21 years old and studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. She continued on to establish a career as a model in cities like New York, Paris, and Milan, becoming one of the first Indians to do so.
Over the course of her career, Lakshmi has posed for a number of well-known worldwide fashion labels, including as Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Alberta Ferretti, and Ralph Lauren. She was a favorite model of German-American photographer Helmut Newton, and you may have seen her in campaigns for Versus and Roberto Cavalli. For publications like FHM, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire’s Indian Edition, Newsweek, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue India, Lakshmi has served as a cover model. She rose to fame in 2009 after posing in a nude Allure cover.
