Robert Sylvester Kelly is an American singer and songwriter who has been convicted on sex offender charges. An award-winning singer, Kelly sold over 75 million records and is regarded as one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
R Kelly was born on January 8, 1967 at South Side of Chicago to a devout Christian and school teacher. He began singing in church at the age of 8.
Kelly gained the attention of music lovers in 1989, when he performed on the talent TV show Big Break and won $100,000 with his group MGM. In 1993, he released his first solo album, 12 Play and it topped all charts. By 1995, he was an acclaimed R&B star.
In 1998, he launched his recording label Rockland Records and released his fourth album R. It was described as “the most ambitious project of his career” and it was a huge success.
On July 11, 2019, Kelly was arrested on federal charges alleging sex crimes and obstruction of justice. His trial started on August 18, 2021 and he was found guilty. He was sentenced to 25 years-to-life imprisonment.
