The teacher Negin and the businessman-turned-lawyer Anis welcomed Salman Rushdie into the world on June 19, 1947, in Bombay, British India.

After attending the Cathedral and John Connon Schools in Bombay and the Rugby School in Warwickshire, England, Rushdie studied there. At King’s College in Cambridge, he pursued higher education in history.

The year 1975 saw the publication of Rushdie’s debut book, “Grimus.” It is a book of science fiction and fantasy that, in part, tells the tale of a young Native American man who, after ingesting a special fluid, is given the ability to live forever.

The book won the Booker Prize, establishing the author as a literary superstar. Rushdie then published “Shame,” a book that came in second place for the 1983 Booker Prize.

Rushdie was married to Clarissa Luard for the first time in 1976.

Following Rushdie’s introduction to Australian author Robyn Davidson, they separated in 1987 and had a son together named Zafar.

The following year, in 1988, Rushdie wed American author Marianne Wiggins; they later divorced. Milan, his son, was born to him and Elizabeth West, his third wife.

After that, Rushdie wed Padma Lakshmi, an actress, model, and television host, from 2004 to 2007. He has mostly lived in New York City, close to Union Square, since 2000.

Rushdie leans leftist most of the time. He supported the UK Labour Party in the 1980s and pushed for legislation to end racial discrimination against immigrants and other ethnic minorities.
