Wiggins was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on November 8, 1947. In 1965, she wed Brian Porzak, with whom she had a daughter. In 1970, the couple got a divorce.

Wiggins spent 16 years in London and spent a few months each in Paris, Brussels, and Rome. She wed the author Salman Rushdie in London in January 1988.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a Fatwa on February 14, 1989, ordering Rushdie’s execution for alleged blasphemy in The Satanic Verses. Wiggins went into hiding with Rushdie despite having only told him five days before that she wanted to break their marriage.

The couple was divorced in 1993. Wiggins experienced a stroke in 2016, which rendered her illiterate. After regaining those skills, she spent several years finishing her book Properties of Thirst.

Lara Porzak, her daughter, helped her.
