He has previously worked with the Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees. Gray played baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores while he was a student at Vanderbilt University. Gray was chosen by the Athletics in the opening round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

 

In 2014, he won the American League Pitcher of the Month Award twice, and in 2015, he was chosen to play on an MLB All-Star team. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 2013. Prior to the 2019 season, the Reds acquired Gray, who had previously been acquired by the Yankees in 2017. In 2020, he went 5-3 and had a 3.70 ERA. He led the National League in wild pitches with seven. In 135 + 3 innings across 26 starts in 2021, Gray had a 7-9 record, a 4.19 ERA, and 155 strikeouts.
