Billy Garland, Shakur’s real father, and Afeni Shakur, who was born Alice Faye Williams in North Carolina, were both ardent Black Panther Party members in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Shakur’s mother was on trial in New York City a month before his birth as part of the Panther 21 criminal case. More than 150 charges against her were dropped.
Late in 1993, Shakur joined forces with Tyrus “Big Syke” Himes, Diron “Macadoshis” Rivers, his stepbrother Mopreme Shakur, and Walter “Rated R” Burns to establish the group Thug Life. On October 11, 1994, Thug Life issued their lone album, Gold-certified Thug Life: Volume 1.
