The daughter of Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi and Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American congresswoman, Hirsi grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She took part in the demonstration at the Mall of America for Jamar Clark’s justice when she was 12 years old. Hirsi went to Minneapolis South High School, where she received her diploma in 2021. She joined the environmental club at her high school her freshman year, and soon after got active in climate action. Between March 15 and May 3, 2019, Hirsi organized hundreds of student-led strikes across the country. In January 2019, she helped launch the U.S. Youth Climate Strike, the nation’s chapter of a global youth climate change movement. She serves as this organization’s co-executive director. She received a Brower Youth Award in 2019. Hirsi was given the Voice of the Future Award in the same year. Hirsi was included on BET’s “Future 40” list for 2020.
