Seventeen years after Jamey Johnson made his Grand Ole Opry debut, the nation singer was requested to hitch the Nashville establishment with a surprise invitation throughout Saturday’s showcase.
After performing alongside Opry member Invoice Anderson, Johnson was knowledgeable by Anderson that “Opry administration instructed me to inform you that that is going to be your final visitor look.” Johnson responded, “I’ve been kicked out of a complete lot of locations in my life.”

Whereas it’s been practically a decade since Johnson launched a studio album — and even longer since his final LP of unique music, 2010’s The Guitar Music — the singer has been a frequent visitor on the Opry stage, showing a handful of instances yearly since his Opry debut.
Following the shock announcement Saturday, Anderson reminded Johnson that he truly needed to settle for the invitation. “I accepted it 20 years in the past! I actually don’t know what to say besides the plain,” Johnson added. “I like nation music. I’d have by no means moved right here if it wasn’t for that; for the Opry preserving it alive and for the followers. I like you. Thanks.”
Johnson — who capped off the night by performing his 2008 hit “In Colour” — will formally be inducted into the Opry on a later date.
In 2021, Johnson spoke to Rolling Stone about why — regardless of touring frequently — he’s taken such an extended break between studio albums. “I don’t have to put out an album, and I do know some folks do put out albums yearly,” Johnson stated.
“However I solely need to put out an album if it’s going to be good, if it’s going to be one thing that I need to exit and play each night time. And if I’ve obtained these songs, then I’ve no cause to not put it out. However within the absence of that, I don’t see why I’d. You understand, I wouldn’t waste all people’s time and a spotlight to come back hear the most recent bucket of crap.”
