Juliane Koepcke, also known as Juliane Diller, was born on October 10, 1954, in Lima, Peru, to parents Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke. She was the only child of ornithologist Maria Koepcke and German biologist Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke.

Juliane Koepcke’s parents were both employed at the Lima Museum of Natural History. Her parents relocated to the Amazon rainforest when she was 14 to establish Panguana, a research station.

Juliane Koepcke, on the other hand, attended the Deutsche Schule Lima Alexander von Humboldt and graduated on December 23, 1971. She and her mother, Maria, boarded LANSA Flight 508 on Christmas Eve 1971.

Juliane Koepcke was still strapped to her seat when she fell 3,000 meters into the Peruvian rain forest.

After her mother died, Juliane Koepcke became the sole survivor of the LANSA Flight 508 plane crash. She went on to survive 11 days alone in the Amazon rainforest.

Her survival story has been included in her autobiography When I Fell From the Sky, as well as Werner Herzog’s documentary, Wings of Hope.

Juliane Koepcke, like her parents, graduated from the University of Kiel in 1980 with a degree in biology.

After receiving her doctorate from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, she returned to Peru to conduct extensive bat research.

Erich Diller is a parasitic wasp specialist entomologist.
