After only two years of marriage, Griffith and her first husband got a divorce. She had a son and two daughters. She moved to Mexico in 2016, and on August 10, 2022, she passed away in Lake Chapala, Mexico, from Lyme illness, which she had contracted in 2015. As a journalist for the Associated Press and the Denver Post, she started her career in the newspaper industry.
