Marcel Marceau was a young Jewish man who worked with the French Resistance and spent the most of World War Two in hiding. He performed his first important performance before 3,000 troops after Paris was freed in August.
During the war, he studied mime and theatrical art in Paris. Marceau invented Bip the Clown in 1947, and he debuted at the Théâtre de Poche in Paris (Pocket Theatre). He showed up wearing a faded silk opera hat and a striped sweater.

Marcel Marceau was born to Jewish parents in Strasbourg, France. Charles Mangel, his father, was a kosher butcher who was born in Bedzin, Poland. His mother, Anne Werzberg, was a native of the now-Ukrainian city of Yabluniv.
He was related to the Israeli singer Yardena Arazi through his mother’s side of the family. When Marcel was four years old, the family moved to Lille, but they finally returned to Strasbourg.
