Violence has rocked the campuses of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) following a standoff between students and armed security personnel who have been deployed to maintain calm.

MyNewsGh.com can report that the situation escalated when the masked armed policemen and students came face-to-face amidst pelting of stones and sporadic firing of warning shots at the Destiny Block area a while ago.

It has been confirmed that the windshields of several cars have been smashed by the enraged students to have also vandalized security posts in protest of the attack on a third-year student who was beaten to pulp and is reported to have lost his memory.

According to our reporters on the ground, the university’s security personnel were seen fleeing their respective posts literally going on relays without batons when they heard the angry students charging towards their direction.

The situation according to our reporters who are given the situation a full coverage would have been bloody but for the intervention of the armed police but that appears to have done little as private cars and motorbikes of the security personnel and other support staff have been burnt.

The leadership of the student body is yet to officially comment on the matter but sources indicate that a reinforcement from the Ashanti Regional Police Command has been sought to contain the chaotic situation at the premier university with students at warpaths with the Vice-Chancellor they accuse of superintending over affairs of the school with tyranny.
