The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) confirmed that two of its member taxi associations will embark on a strike on Thursday, 24 March, in Cape City.

CAPE TOWN TAXI DRIVERS TO STRIKE ON THURSDAY

SANTACO stated CATA and CODETA have been granted permission for a joint march to the workplace of the Western Cape Premier.

The 2 associations, which had been the guts of the lethal taxi violence within the Metropolis in 2021, will current a memorandum with a set of grievances to Alan Winde.

Santaco’s spokesperson Gershon Geyer stated the grievances are particularly associated to drivers who function in townships.

“Additionally they decided that none of their automobiles will likely be working tomorrow.

“Cata and Codeta gave Santaco the reassurance that there will likely be no interference and intimidation of the opposite areas that will likely be working as per regular,” stated Geyer.

Santaco stated all different transport providers are anticipated to function as regular.

A Cata spokesperson stated the grievances embody impounding of taxis and the unfair necessities for releasing impounded automobiles alongside different points. Roughly 2000 operators are anticipated to take part within the march.

“Taxis will depart from Nyanga and Khayelitsha at 7:00 and a march will begin at 10:30 from District Six.

“A memorandum will likely be submitted to the Premier’s workplace at 11:30. Two thousand taxi operators are anticipated to take part,” stated the CATA spokesperson.
