On September 26, 1948, in Cambridge, England, Brinley “Bryn” Newton-John (1914–1992) and Irene Helene (1914–2003), both Welsh, gave birth to Olivia Newton-John. The Nobel Prize-winning scientist Max Born, her Jewish maternal grandfather, and his family fled Nazi Germany for Britain before World War II in order to escape the regime. Through Newton-maternal John’s grandmother, who also had a paternal Jewish heritage, she was a third cousin of comedian Ben Elton.

 

Her maternal great-grandfather was the lawyer Victor Ehrenberg, and her maternal great-grandfather was the lawyer Rudolf von Jhering.

According to Newton-father, an MI5 agent working on the Enigma project at Bletchley Park during World War II made the arrest of Rudolf Hess. After the war, he was appointed headmaster of the Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. Newton-John was the third of three children, following her sister Rona (1941-2013), an actress who was married to Olivia’s Grease co-star Jeff Conaway from 1980 until their divorce in 1985, and her brother Hugh (1939-2019), a physician.

Newton-family John’s immigrated to Melbourne, Australia, when she was six years old, where her father worked as a professor of German and master of Ormond College at the University of Melbourne.

She claimed that in 2013, despite keeping it a secret, she had received a second cancer diagnosis. At the age of 73, the legendary musical singer Olivia Newton-John passed away. She was most known for her pivotal role in the movie Grease.
