In 1987, he was hitched to actress Jean Smart. On the set of Designing Women, where he played J. D. Shackelford, Mary Jo Shively’s boyfriend, played by Annie Potts, they got to know one another.

In the 1970s, Gilliland made his on-screen debut. His major appearances include The Waltons, Thirtysomething, Party of Five, Little Women, and a regular character on Designing Women (where he met Smart, who starred as Charlene in that series).
