Ronaldo feels ’embarrassed’ by rape allegations

Cristiano Ronaldo admits he felt “embarrassed” by allegations he raped a woman in Las Vegas.

The Portuguese forward was accused of sexually assaulting American Kathryn Mayorga in a hotel room in June, 2009 – a claim he denied.

Ronaldo admits the allegations have taken a toll on him.

“They play with your dignity,” Ronaldo told ‘Good Morning Britain’ in an interview with Piers Morgan that will air on Tuesday.

“It’s hard. You have a girlfriend, you have a family, you have kids. When they play with your honesty, it’s bad, it’s hard.

“I remember one day I was at home in the living room with my girlfriend watching the television to see the news and they speak about ‘Cristiano Ronaldo this and that.’

“I listened to my kids coming down the stairs and I changed the channel because I was embarrassed.

“I just changed the channel for Cristiano Jr not to see that they speak bad about his father about a very bad case.”

During the interview, Ronaldo also became emotional when speaking about his father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, who passed away aged 52 in 2005 due to cirrhosis, two years after he joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon.

Ronaldo broke down into tears when shown footage by Morgan of his father praising his son for Norwegian TV shortly before he died.

“I never saw that video. Unbelievable,” Ronaldo said. “I think the interview would be funny, but I didn’t expect to cry. But I never saw these images. I don’t know where you… I have to have these images to show my family.

“I really don’t know my father 100 per cent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard.

“To be the number one and he don’t see nothing, and he don’t see to receive awards, to see what I became.”
