Her mother was Geroldine Marie Barnitz, who died in 2009. She was a leather stamper with French, German, and Dutch roots. Also, her father, Manuel Ybarra Cruz, was born in Oxnard, California, in 1922 and died in 1966.
He was related to the White Mountain Apache and Yaqui people.
Manuel and Geroldine were both people who made saddles. The owner of the Leonard Saddle Co. in Santa Barbara, Leo Leonard, taught Geroldine the trade, and Manuel started making saddles when he was a child in San Francisco.
In 1949, they moved to Salinas and started their own business, which they called Cruz Saddlery. Her mother kept running the business after her father died in 1966.
