Samuel Burgess, an English former rugby league football player who played as a loose forward, prop, or second-row forward in the 2000s and 2010s, was born on December 14, 1988.

He had previously played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Australia’s NRL and the Bradford Bulls in England’s Super League. The 2014 NRL Premiership was the first for the Rabbitohs in 43 years, and Burgess was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for being the game’s best player in the Grand Final. At the international level, he represented both England and Great Britain.

Burgess switched sports to play rugby union for Bath in late 2014. In August 2015, he received a call-up to the England national team, making him a dual-code international. He then participated in England’s disappointing 2015 Rugby Union World Cup campaign before switching back to rugby league for the 2016 NRL season.

Burgess announced his immediate retirement from all contests on October 30, 2019, citing a shoulder ailment that would end his career. Burgess is presently employed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs as an assistant coach.
