Former Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles owner Hankerson “willfully disregarded his tax obligations for many years,” according to an email statement from acting U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine to the AJC.
“Payroll taxes are a significant source of income for the federal government and fund social insurance programs like Social Security and Medicare. Employers that disregard their legal responsibilities will be held responsible, Erskine added.
For failing to fully report payroll taxes from 2012 to 2016, Hankerson, 45, will be sentenced to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a $1,039,310.65 restitution payment.
