A hunger stone, as it is known in German, is a typical hydrological landmark in Central Europe.

As famine memorials and warnings, hunger stones were erected between the 15th and the 19th century in Germany and in ethnic German communities throughout Europe.
These stones were placed into a river during droughts to warn future generations that they will have to deal with famine-related troubles if the water level dips to this level again.
In one famous example, the Czech city of Dn’s Elbe river features the warning “If you see me, weep” engraved into it.

During a time of low water that coincided with the World War I famines in 1918, a hunger stone on the Elbe River’s bed close to Tetschen became visible.
Similar hunger stones in the river were rediscovered in 2018 during a drought.
Following the 1816–1817 famine crisis, many of these stones with carvings or other works of art were constructed.
