“The penalty kick I missed at the 2010 World Cup has helped me to become a better penalty taker” – Asamoah Gyan

Most decorated Blacks Stars footballer and Ghanaian international, Asamoah Gyan, has said the penalty he missed against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup has been a blessing to his career.

According to the former captain of the national team, he used to take his penalty by targeting a spot and hitting it hard to score.

However, the last miss at the Mundial in South Africa and the heartbreak he brought to Ghanaians and the entire Africa continent has taught him to master the skill of taking penalties.

“Previously, I used to take penalties without looking at the movement of the goalkeeper. Because I have the technique I just target an angle and then shoot,”

“But after the penalty miss against Uruguay in the World Cup, I changed the way I take penalties,” he said in an interview on Max TV.

Asamoah Gyan went on to state that he now considers the movement of the goalkeeper before kicking from the spot.

“Now I watch the goalkeeper, I look at his moves and how he makes his steps and then I shoot. So now it is much easier for me,” he added.

Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s record goalscorer with 51 goals and doubles as Africa’s top goal scorer at the World Cup with six goals.

He now plies his trade in India for the North East United side after a perfect career with Al Ain in the UAE.
