After several speculations and heated debates, President Akufo-Addo has announced that the University for Development studies will be renamed to honor late Former president Jerry John Rawlings.
The Ex Military man earlier publicly declined the suggestion made by the incumbent government to rename the Northern based University after him. However his family has endorsed the proposal after his sad demise in attempt to keep his legacy alive and all necessary formalities are already underway for the change to take effect.
His Excellency made this known to the public in his tribute speech at the pre burial service held today in the Country’s capital, Accra.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him. His reason was that, in adhering to a long-standing principle, he did not want to have any national monument or facility named after him. Two days after his passing, at the 21st Congregation of UDS, I expressed my strongest convictions, in spite of his reservations, that such an honour should be accorded him. I am glad that this has found favour with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, i.e. The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale.” The President said.
Knowing very well the University has different campuses aside Tamale, Lot’s of Ghanaians are bemusedly asking the president’ if the change is one that affects only the University’s main campus ‘Tamale’ or the entire Institution irrespective of which campus one found him or herself.
